BABES
The Beginning Alcohol and Addictions Basic Education Studies (BABES) is a primary prevention program designed to teach children how to live a happy, healthy, drug and tobacco free life.
Trained RSVP volunteers, using BABES puppets, present accurate, nonjudgmental information in a manner designed to enable children to grasp the importance of positive living skills and good decision making techniques. This program is designed to help children understand and develop skills necessary to cope with unhappy situations, promote self-esteem, define peer pressure and provide the tools necessary to make good choices.
The puppets discuss issues children can relate to. The BABES puppets are: Buttons and Bows, two kittens, who are brother and sister; Early Bird, who warns of danger; Myth Mary, who doesn't always say things that are true; Recovering Reggie, who is recovering from drugs and alcohol abuse; Donovan Dignity, who is the wise old owl; and Rhonda Rabbit, who is an abused child with the experience of life in a chemically dependent environment.
There are six lessons, usually presented twice a week for about 30 minutes. The lives of the puppets are captured in the lessons listed below:
Feelings & Self Esteem - believe that you are special and learn what you can do to make yourself feel better.
Peer Pressure - choose to make good choices. The puppets and children learn not to listen to peer pressure. Just because someone asks you to do something that is wrong, don't do it if it's not right.
Coping Skills - decide if there is anything about an unhappy time that can be changed and learn to say that I will change the things I can.
Alcohol & Drug Information - learn when to stop when you have had too much of something. The puppets discuss that drinking too much pop can hurt your teeth and alcohol and drugs can make a person do things that hurt others and themselves.
Asking for Help - discover it is brave and smart to ask for help when needed. The puppets explain how to find a trusting adult to help when needed.
When You Don't Know What To Do - educate children from chemically dependent homes. The puppets discover the damage caused by living in a chemically dependent environment. The concept of your private body and how to protect it is discussed. The characters learn they have something to offer and they have the capacity to help one another.
After the Final Lesson, the characters review what they have learned from the stories. They discuss how and when their new knowledge will help them to live a healthy, happy life. The puppets award every student who has completed the program a BABES certificate.
Presently, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program has 18 trained presenters who will share the BABES message with over 600 students in 15 Portage County elementary schools during this school year. RSVP provides puppets and all supplies needed to conduct the classes. RSVP has coordinated this program since 1996.
There is always a need for more volunteers to become part of the BABES family.
