Services and Functions
This website is dedicated to providing information related to the Portage County Courthouse planning project currently underway. The Building Review Committee for Public Safety Needs (BRC), an ad hoc committee of the Portage County Board, has been assigned the task of recommending actions to address deficiencies with the existing Courthouse and Jail facilities. The top link at left contains the resolution which established the scope and lifespan of the BRC. Through its deliberations since March 2009, the BRC has selected the Courthouse as the primary need for action at this time, with an emphasis on reusing as much existing office space as possible in the new design. It is intended that the facility design go to a referendum vote in April of 2010.
The BRC selected a preferred Courthouse Concept in October 2009. At the November 17, 2009 Portage County Board meeting, Venture Architects of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the firm retained by Portage County to assist in the design of the Concept, made a presentation of the work accomplished in the design process, and a preliminary budget for implementing the Concept. Also at the November 17th meeting, the County's Finance Director Jennifer Jossie and financial consultant Jeff Belongia presented information on how the Courthouse construction could be financed, and City of Stevens Point Mayor Andrew Halverson submitted a Letter of Intent formalizing the City's endorsement and support for the recommended Concept. On December 15, 2009, the Portage County Board took action on 2 separate Resolutions regarding the project. Resolution 247-2008-2010 Favoring Construction of A New Courthouse Facility, and 248-2008-2010 Authorizing an Advisory Referendum Election Question. The additional links at left provide information on: the timeline for the planning process, the current conceptual design for an expanded Courts facility, Wisconsin Supreme Court recommendations for minimum space requirements, a 1995 U.S. Marshal's Court Security and Assessment Report, and access to video of the Building Review Committee and County Board (11-17, 12-15) meetings and City of Stevens Point Plan Commission (10-13, 11-10) and Common Council (11-16) meetings where the conceptual designs were discussed.
