Changes to Items Allowed to be Sent to Inmates
Effective immediately, The Portage County Jail is no longer allowing books, magazines, or word puzzle books to be dropped off by friends or family. All books, magazines, word puzzle books, and the like must be sent through the mail directly from a book store/publisher (e.g. Barnes and Noble, Amazon.) Any of these items that are sent from a home or similar address will not be accepted via mail and will be returned to sender. If that is not possible, it will be placed in the inmate’s property. We will not accept any books, magazines, word puzzle books, or similar items sent through EBAY or other private person-to-person seller sites.. Remember that puzzle books can be purchased from Canteen for $2.84.
Any colored pictures (e.g. crayons, colored penciles), cards, or Polaroid pictures that are sent in the mail will be photocopied (black and white) and given to the inmate. The originals will be placed in the inmate’s property. All postage stamps will be removed from all envelopes and discarded.
These steps are being taken to further enhance the safety and security of the Jail, and prevent drugs and other contraband from being smuggled into the facility. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
