RSVP Reading Tutors
Help a child learn to read. Become a tutor!
Reading is a key to success in education and in life. Unfortunately, many children fall behind in school because they do not learn to read early and read well.
Four out of ten fourth-graders can't read at grade level.
With their time, talent, and wisdom, seniors are helping children learn to read by serving with RSVP. Working closely with teachers these senior volunteers are giving children the extra boost they need to succeed.
Since 1998 RSVP has offered the tutoring program under the auspices of the national America Reads initiative. America Reads is a challenge from the President to all Americans to help ensure that all children read well and independently by the third grade.
In Portage County, RSVP volunteers serve 90 minutes one day each week in first or second grade classrooms. They are assigned three children (30 minutes each) to tutor under the direct supervision and instruction of the classroom teacher.
Tutor and teacher evaluations indicate that the program is a tremendous success. Teachers report that through the one-on-one attention, students have shown greater self-esteem and confidence, improved writing skills and sight vocabulary and an improved willingness to take a risk in their attitude towards learning.
Comments from Volunteers:
"The child's confidence increased as did her determination to enjoy our time together. I believe she grew through our one-on-one time together. She thanked me for helping her spell better and for being her friend!"
"This child was a very quiet, sweet first-grader who started slowly with much reserve in her quiet voice and had a very somber expression. After several weeks she became more responsive, and it was a joy to see her lovely smile appear more often."
"This volunteer assignment has been more than what I expected. It's been a very rewarding experience and a joy for me."
Comment from a Teacher:
"The volunteers' experience and knowledge-sharing added another dimension to the education of my students. Their love and care added to the children's self-esteem."
