Home-delivered meals are available to the homebound elderly throughout the county.

Do you have special diet requirements? In most cases these can be provided for at the dining sites—ask your local Dining Site Manager.

Would you like to help at the site? Teams of volunteers are needed to set up, serve and clean up at the dining sites, to deliver meals or to provide rides for participants.

The Nutrition Program is funded under Titles IIIC-1 and 2 of the Older Americans Act, by county tax dollars and participant donations, and by a grant from the United Way of Portage County.

Home-Delivered Meals

Homebound older adults may receive home-delivered meals. Depending upon where a person lives in Portage County, these meals are provided by either Meals on Wheels, Inc., or our Nutrition Program.

What if you need a special diet?
We can provide for some special diet needs. To do so, however, we must have a diet order from your doctor.

What if you can't be at home when the meal arrives?
To be eligible for home-delivered meals, you must be unable to leave home unassisted. If you won't be home at noon because of a doctor's appointment or other circumstances, be sure to let your local Nutrition Program Dining Site Manager or the Aging & Disability Resource Center know in advance.
Note: If we bring a meal to your home and you don't answer the door, we'll assume that you're in an emergency situation and we'll call your contact person or alert an emergency medical team—so please remember to cancel your meal for a day you won't be home.

How long can you receive the meals?
You're eligible to receive meals in your home as long as you're physically unable to prepare your own meals and there's no one available to do so for you. Periodically you'll be assessed to determine continued eligibility. If you feel the meals are no longer needed you can cancel them by calling the Aging & Disability Resource Center .

How much do you pay for the meals?
If you're age 60 or over you pay by making a donation toward the cost of the meal. You must decide how much to give according to how much you can afford and how important the meals are to you. Most people give between $2.00 and $3.00. The meal costs about $6.75 (which includes the costs of food, delivery, equipment, wages and administration). Part of the meal cost is paid by federal, state and county tax dollars and a grant from the United Way of Portage County. We also depend on your donations to help cover the cost of bringing meals to you. You can make your donation daily, weekly or monthly to the driver or by check to the Aging & Disability Resource Center—we'll send you a monthly letter showing you how many meals you received. You may use the addressed envelope included if you wish to send a check.

What happens if there's a storm?
We don't send our drivers out on days when schools have closed due to weather conditions. Listen to WSPT FM 98 or AM 1010 radio—if you hear that schools are closed you'll know that your meal has been cancelled. We suggest you be prepared by keeping an emergency food supply (if you need help planning or shopping for that supply, call your local Dining Site Manager or the Aging & Disability Resource Center ).
