CONSERVATION WATERSHED ORGANIZATIONS

 Tomorrow/Waupaca River

Through a $10,000 River Planning Grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Goldefotrn Sands Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) was able to assist a locally led effort to maintain or improve the quality of water in the Tomorrow/Waupaca River, which is classified as a Class I trout stream. The Friends of the Waupaca Tomorrow River was born and evolved to result in the creation and distribution of their own newsletter, the design and installation of watershed information signs, three river clean-up days, a River Talk series, a Strategic Plan and a citizen-based volunteer monitoring program.

Mill Creek Watershed

Mill Creek receives municipal stormwater runoff, municipal wastewater effluent and runoff from farms before discharging into the Wisconsin River. Low dissolved oxygen and high phosphorus have placed Mill Creek on the EnvironmentalProtection Agency's (EPA) 303(d) List of Impaired Waters and a reduction in desirable fish and invertebrates have raised concern among local landowners. Because of this, one of the goals of the LWRM Plan focuses on reduction of surface water pollution on Mill Creek.fomc

In 2002 and 2003, a $10,000 River Planning Grant from the Wisconsin DNR allowed Golden Sands RC&D the opportunity to facilitate the organization of a citizen-led watershed group charged with understanding and improving conditions in the creek and watershed community. The group, Friends of the Mill Creek Watershed, Inc. (FOMC), got started on several stream improvement and public education projects, and with the new 2005 River Planning grant, Golden Sands RC&D continued to work with the group to build a strong community-based stream improvement program.

A major accomplishment of the 2005 grant project was the completion of a physical inventory of Mill Creek from the headwaters to the mouth. The inventory included collecting field data and photos at cross sections, as well as photos and notes of other notable features. The Geological Information System (GIS) product created will be used by conservation agencies to implement projects in the watershed.

Little Plover River

Diminished flow in the Little Plover River prompted the formation of the Little Plover River Work Group and the Friends of the Little Plover River.

The Work Group is working on solutions for restoring a healthy flow to the River. The Work Group consists of representatives from the Villages of Plover and Whiting, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Department of Natural Resources, Portage County, Trout Unlimited, Del Monte Inc., area potato and vegetable growers, and the Wisconsin River Alliance. Advisory support is provided by the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, the Wisconsin Geologic and Natural History Survey, the U. S. Geological Survey, the U.S.D.A Natural Resources Conservation Service, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, Golden Sands RC&D, the Rural Water Association, and Earth Tech. More information on the Little Plover River's diminished flow can be found in the report titled Knowledge Development for Groundwater Withdrawal Management around the Little Plover.

folprThe Friends of the Little Plover River is a diverse citizens group working toward keeping the Little Plover River healthy, and focuses on education and getting information to the general public. Visit their website at www.friendsofthelittleploverriver.org.
