The Portage County Sheriff's Office Communication Center, commonly referred to as the Communication Center, provides a vast array of services to a number of agencies and the citizens of Portage County 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The Professionals in the Communication Center that make up the hub of the communication services provided by the Portage County Sheriff's Office are:

  • The Communication Manager
  • Two Communication Supervisors
  • 16 Communication Technicians, also referred to as Dispatchers

The Communication Center is controlled by as many as 5 Communication Technicians during statistically busy time periods of the day, and serves as the County's Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for 911 calls. The Communication Center is responsible for activating the County's weather alert sirens and also utilizes the Portage County Community Alert referred to as Community Alert for emergency and non-emergency notifications. The Communication Technicians are certified through International Academy of Emergency Medical Communication (IAEMD) and are trained to provide emergency medical instructions to callers while emergency responders are enroute to their needed location.

What we do

Portage County is located in Central Wisconsin. The Portage County Sheriff's Office Communication Center provides communication services to all areas of the 823 square miles of Portage County, serving a population of 70,806 per county records. Located within Portage County are the City of Stevens Point (population 27,129) and the Village of Plover (population 12,373). Remaining census is located in 17 Townships and 8 Villages.

This population has been served through the years by the communication centers of Portage County Sheriff's Office and Stevens Point Police Department.  After extensive remodeling at our Communication Center, the Sheriff's Office absorbed the dispatching duties of the Stevens Point Police Department in June of 2013.  This allows us to better serve the whole County, its law enforcement officers, and all of the emergency service agencies.
