Pesticide Levels in Portage County Groundwater

What pesticides have been found in groundwater?

In 1980, Aldicarb was the first pesticide found in Wisconsin groundwater near Stevens Point in the Central Sands Area.  Aldicarb was used on potato crops to control insects.  As of 1992, 39 different pesticides have been detected in Wisconsin groundwater with 17 of these exceeding the State Groundwater Enforcement Standards66

Atrazine, an herbicide used to kill weeds in corn fields, is one of the most commonly found pesticides in Wisconsin and Portage County groundwater.  In Portage County, atrazine was detected in 40% of the private wells tested with 3% exceeding the standard of 3 ppb. 7
