The Planning and Zoning Department consists of several distinct sections [Zoning, Land Conservation, On-Site Waste, Water Quality (Groundwater), Geographic Information System (GIS), Planning, and Economic Development]. The configuration of the Planning and Zoning Department is the result of a reorganization that took place in the late 1980's, when the current Department was created out of several independent departments/functions. This multi-section Department strives to operate efficiently and effectively to find the best way to provide services to the residents of Portage County.

Department Mission:
To protect and promote the health, safety, and general welfare of all citizens and visitors of Portage County. To protect the natural resources and built environments through professional administration and equitable enforcement of applicable County Codes and Ordinances, and State laws/codes. To promote environmental protection activities in the County relating to agriculture, soil and water conservation, non-point source water pollution control, farmland preservation, erosion control, and groundwater protection.

The Planning and Zoning Department is responsible for 14 Committees:
Planning and Zoning, Land Conservation, Capital Improvements/Economic Development, Board of Adjustment, Land Records, Groundwater Citizens Advisory, Justice Coalition, Justice Coalition Advisory, Justice Coalition Executive, Revolving Loan, Central Wisconsin Windshed Partners, Community Development Block Grant-Housing, Stevens Point Urban Area Sewer Service Advisory, and Urban Area Transportation Systems, along with other project specific committees as needed.
