Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) Law
Concealed Carry Class
The Sheriff's Office will host a Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW) class. This class is taught by Sheriff's Deputies who are certified Department of Justice firearms instructors. This class is the actual Department of Justice CCW class developed for the CCW permit application. This class will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016, from 8:00 am to Noon at the Portage County Annex Building, Conference Rooms 1 & 2. The cost of the class is $40/student.
We will also be offering a Basic Handgun Course from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm at the Portage County Law Enforcement Range. Topics for this class will include shooting stance, grip, sight picture, loading, unloading, malfunctions, and firing. Students will need to bring a firearm and 50 to 100 rounds of ammunition for their firearm. The cost for this course is $40 per student.
Students taking both the CCW class and Basic Handgun Course will be charged a total of $60 per student. For more information and to register, call the Portage County Sheriff's Office at 715-346-1819.

Retiree Annual Qualifications
Retirees will have their annual qualifications on April 23, 2016, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. The qualifications will be held at the Portage County Law Enforcement Range. Retirees will need a minimum of 44 rounds of ammunition for the mandated course of fire. It is recommended that retirees bring 100 rounds of ammunition with them. The mandated course of fire can be found on Wilenet under the HR218/LEOSA information icon. There is a $10 fee that will be collected at the range. All retirees must register by calling the Sheriff's Office at 715-346-1819.
