Could all of the law enforcement in the county be consolidated into one county-wide police department?
No. While municipalities are free to provide their own police department, or contract for police services from another municipality or the county, the Sheriff is a constitutionally mandated office. However, all of the law enforcement services across the county could be consolidated under the sheriff's office. Portage County only has two municipalities that provide their own police services, the City of Stevens Point and the Village of Plover. The remaining 96+% of the County is already under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Sheriff's office.
Does the Sheriff's Office enforce municipal ordinances?
No. The Sheriff's Office enforces county ordinances and state law. That is unless the municipality has contracted with the Sheriff's Office for law enforcement.
Do county ordinances apply within my municipality?
Yes, with only a very few exceptions. All county ordinances are enforceable county-wide, except where the statute provides for local ordinances to preclude county ordinance enforcement (e.g. fireworks, solicitors permits). Otherwise, even if a city, village, or town has their own ordinances, the county ordinances still apply.
What is the jurisdiction of the Sheriff's Office?
The Sheriff's Office exercises jurisdiction throughout the County, including within municipal boundaries and in places that have their own police departments. The Sheriff and his deputies also exercise their authority state-wide under certain circumstances, even when outside of their home county.
Where can I look to find out when my next court date will be?
The clock link will take you to the Appearance Times page where you can search the WiCourts.gov "CCAP" database to find your case(s). You can use a simple statewide search by using your first and last name. It will bring up everyone with that name, so you may need to verify which case(s) are yours. If you know your case number, you could type the case number and select a county your case is filed in.
There is also a "Kiosk" located on the 2nd floor of the Courthouse for the public to use to look up circuit court cases that are scheduled for a hearing that day.

I can't find my ticket or case on wicourts.gov (aka "CCAP") when I use case search?
If your citation is for a non-criminal offense and was issued by the City of Stevens Point or Village of Plover, you may want to contact the municipal clerk of court at 715-342-4054. Or, you can use the link to redirect to the City of Stevens Point website.
If the citation is for a non-criminal offense and was not issued by the City or Village, it may have not been filed with the Clerk of Court yet. Once it is filed, the case will show on the wicourts.gov (aka CCAP) website. You may want to contact the Portage County Clerk of Court at 715-346-1364 ext 4 to verify or use the link to check back later on the CCAP website.
If your citation or bond is for a criminal offense, the District Attorney may not have filed the case with the Clerk of Court yet. How do I visit an inmate in the Jail?
Can I surrender an unwanted firearm?
Someone I know was picked up last night or over the weekend. When will he/she have an appearance?
Appearances on new charges are held at different times throughout the day/week. Please contact either the District Attorney's Office at 715-346-1300 or the Clerk of Courts Office anytime after 10:30 a.m.
These appearances are normally held during the late morning hours or in the early afternoon. If a call is made too early, the information will not be available. The defendant may or may not appear in person in the courtroom for the appearance. Many times they will appear by video appearance at the jail.
If I post bond, do I have to appear at all appearances?
If you are the Defendant, an appearance is REQUIRED for ALL scheduled hearings unless otherwise noted. If you fail to appear for any appearance, a warrant WILL be issued for your arrest and you may be charged with bailjumping.
If you are unable to appear, you should immediately contact your attorney or, if you have not retained an attorney, the District Attorney's Office at 715-346-1300 or the Clerk of Courts Office.
How long before my bond money is returned to me?
After the case is closed, it may take the Clerk of Courts Office 2-4 weeks to return any bond money to the poster.
How do I get my bond money returned?
In the event the defendant is found guilty and sentenced, the bond money will be applied to fines, costs, restitution, or as the Court orders. After being applied, if there is bond money to be refunded, it will be returned to the poster.
If the charges are dismissed, the bond money will be returned to the poster.
If you wish to receive your bond money back prior to the closing of the case, the poster will need to provide a written request to the Judge that it is assigned to the Defendant's case(s). The Judge may require a hearing be scheduled to make the determination of returning bond prior to the case(s) being closed.
How do I post bond for myself or for someone else?
If you are posting bond during the Clerk of Courts working hours (Mon. - Fri. 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) you will need to go to that office. After working hours, please contact the Portage County Sheriff's Department/Jail. Please have the name of the person you are posting the bond for along with what they were picked up for. Our office will fill out a bond form with the proper information and have you sign it. We will then give that form to you to take to the Portage County Sheriff's Department/Jail and they will process the paperwork there. Please read the following information prior to posting ANY bond:
In the event the Court orders a judgment for a fine or costs, or both, the amount of cash deposited with this bond, if any, shall be applied to the payment of the judgment. This means that before any money is returned to the person or persons making the cash deposit, the cash deposit will first be used for payment of the judgment. Any excess will be returned to the person or persons making the cash deposit. (See ss.l969.02 and 969.03 Wis. Stats.)
Also please be advised, in the event the person you are posting the bond for does not appear at any appearance, the bond may be forfeited.
Government Payment Services (GPS), a contracted company is available for posting bonds for defendants in jail. Contact either the Clerk of Courts Office or the Portage County Sheriff's Dept. for further information.
Can I use a credit card as a payment option?
Yes. Mastercard and Visa credit cards are accepted for all payments except for posting bonds. No other credit cards will be accepted. Bonds can only be posted with cash.
